The face of Chekolech Asmare, a woman in her early sixties, does not reveal much about her 23-year-old occupation - a fulltime gatherer of firewood. Though retired from the active work of gathering firewood, Chekolech is still in the business of selling firewood: now she is the ‘middleman’ between gatherers and the firewood market for close to five years. But she tells stories about her active firewood collecting day as if it happened yesterday.
