This is it!!! I have had it. This is a culmination of so many incidents that have caused me to throw in the towel and accept my country, my people and my government for the failure that they are. Maybe not a complete failure, but they have failed where it counts, respect for our own, respect for the citizens. Complete and utter failure in providing the basic services that a national of a country requires. Add a comment

The wrong choice

The selection of the American nominee Jim Yong Kim as President of the World Bank, over Nigeria’s finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who was overwhelmingly regarded as a vastly superior candidate, is impossible to condone but easy to explain. It also points to serious dangers for the unfinished task of development. Add a comment

Re-capturing the Friedmans

On my desk right now are reporter Timothy Noah’s new book The Great Divergence: America’s Growing Inequality Crisis and What We Can Do about It and Milton and Rose Director Friedman’s classic Free to Choose: A Personal Statement. Considering them together, my overwhelming thought is that the Friedmans would find their task of justifying and advocating small-government libertarianism much harder today than they did in 1979. Dear Editor,
I first realized that something was not quite right after I felt a lump on my left breast. After further medical examination at Bethel Hospital, I was diagnosed with breast cancer (disassociated ductal carcinoma). Add a comment

Banking in the developing world: the poor are different

How many people in the world have bank accounts and what do they use them for? You would think there would be answers to those questions, given that banking is the quintessentially global business, and is important not only in the West but in developing countries, where banks can help poor people save, borrow and invest. In October last year a new government came to power in Denmark, and on 1 January 2012 Denmark took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union. Both in Denmark and in Europe we have strong international ambitions. Add a comment

Smoking dust road to smoking Abay

Tis Abay, which means the smoking Abay, is found 30 kms from Bahir Dar, the capital city of the Amhara Regional State in Ethiopia. But amazingly enough the road to Tis Abay is undertaken by dilapidated old N3 buses whose identity (of the buses) is now totally Ethiopian, as some mechanics chide. Add a comment
