City Cup to kickoff tomorrow
The annual football tournament, the Addis Ababa City Cup, is to kickoff this weekend, October 8, 2017 at the Addis Ababa Stadium.
The Addis Ababa City Cup, which is being hosted by the Addis Ababa Football Federation (AAFF), will be held for the twelfth time on Sunday. Eight Ethiopian Premier League (EPL) clubs and one club from the Higher League will be part of the tournament that starts this weekend.
The organizers anticipate earning a significant amount of money from sponsorship deals and ticket sales in order to manage the expense of clubs, according to Yonas Hagos, executive member of the Addis Ababa Football Federation. The preseason competition will see six capital city clubs in action including four-time defending champion St. George and capital city archrival Ethiopia Coffee.
Earlier, the Federation was to host the competition at the end of September. However, due to 2017/18 EPL season program arrangement and the extended rainy season, the organizers were forced to postpone the tournament until October. “The preseason competition will help the clubs assess their squads and prepare for EPL matches,” Yonas told The Reporter.
Past experiences show that it was not possible for invited clubs to keep the trophy after winning the tournament. However, during the meeting that was held on October 2, at Ethiopia Hotel, the organizers decided that the winner will have the right to take the cup.
The draw for this year grouped Ethiopia Coffee with Dedebit, Addis Ababa City and newcomers Jimma Aba Jiffar, whereas under Group B defending champion St. George will face with Adama City, Electric and Defense. Jimma Abba Jiffar and Ethiopia Coffee will play the opening match of 12th edition of the Addis Ababa City Cup.
So far, the Horsemen have dominated the City Cup winning it four times. Ethiopia Coffee and Electric follow with three trophies to their names while Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) have won it once.
