    Good start for the Walias

Nationally, the 2020/21 football season saw Ethiopia qualify for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after an eight year absence. The Walias were grouped with Ivory Coast, Madagascar and Niger for the qualifiers. They played the first match against Madagascar, which ended with a disappointing result.

However, the Walias managed to beat Ivory Coast, Niger and Madagascar in Bahir Dar stadium on the way to their qualification as runners up in the group that saw Ivory Coast win the group.

Ethiopia’s qualification after an eight year absence was celebrated across the country.

It is to be recalled that the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) announced Coach Wubetu Abate as the new coach since September 25, 2020, replacing Abraham Mebratu, who had been training the team since July, 2019.
