Debretsion clinches top TPLF position

In one of the most eventful weeks in recent memory,  the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has decided to elect Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD), Minister of Information Communication Technology, as chairman replacing Abay Woldu, who was removed from the party’s executive committee and the chairmanship yesterday.

Completing its marathon party meeting and criticism and self-criticism sessions yesterday, TPLF has also chosen to replace Debretsion with Fetlework Gebreegziabher as deputy chair position.

Apart from that, the election held today, following an intense week of criticism and self-criticism, also instituted new members to the party’s executive committee to replace the three members that it had to axe and the vacant position left by Tedros Adhanom (PhD) who left for the WHO’s top job.

As a result, Asmelash Woldesellasie, Getachew Reda, Keria Ibrahim and Abraham Tekeste (PhD) were elected as new members of the executive committee of the TPLF. The remaining members of the executive committee who retained their positions are Getachew Assefa, Alem Gebrewahid and Addisalem Balema (PhD).

It is to be remembered that a day earlier, the party suspended the former first lady Azeb Mesfin from the executive committee and demoted the president of the region, Abay Woldu, and Beyene Mikru, deputy chair of Endowment Fund For The Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT) from their executive committee membership but still remained in the central committee.

Furthermore, before the end of the eventful week, the party’s general assembly is expected to decide on the fate of Azeb who walked out during the party’s criticism and self-criticism session, The Reproter has learnt.
