Ethio Telecom resumes issuing replacement SIM cards

Operator denies voucher shortage

Ethio Telecom said on Friday that it has resumed issuing replacement SIM cards after a two-week interruption of the service due to system failure. However, salespersons The Reporter approached had previously asserted that the gap in services was owing to product shortage.

According to sources that talked to The Reporter, the prevailing shortage of both top-up vouchers and replacement SIM cards might have been due to shortage of foreign currency, an explanation the company denies completely.

Whereas the shortage in June of small-denomination top-up vouchers (worth 5 and 10 birr) was resolved, this time around the shortage is said to be that of 50 and 100 birr cards, according to customers. But, the company insists that voucher shortage is not an issue at the moment.

It is to be recalled that the company faced a similar shortage (of low-priced vouchers) back in June. Ethio Telecom CEO Andualem Admassie (PhD) at that time blamed private distributors for deliberately creating artificial shortage by engaging in hoarding. Shortage of hard currency was also another factor cited by the CEO.

The number of mobile-phone and fixed-line subscribers has reached 54.8 million and 1.2 million, respectively. And the total number of Internet and data users has reached 16.9 million, according to the state-owned company.
