Horsemen aim to extend a perfect start

Dedebit to play under interim coach  Coffee hopes to bounce back

Week four fixtures of the Ethiopian Premier League will continue on Saturday with Dedebit FC hosting Hawasa City while defending champions Saint George entertain Fasil City on Sunday. In the weekend’s other match, Adama City will play on their home turf against Ethiopia Coffee at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Adama.

Title contenders Dedebit FC, a.k.a. the Blues, who were defeated by the champions on week two of the premier league at Addis Ababa stadium and drew with newly-promoted Woldia City, sacked their coach, Yohannes Sahle, this week. On Saturday the Blues will be managed by assistant coach Elias Ibrahim in their game against Hawassa.

In Sunday’s fixture, the Horsemen will travel to northern Ethiopian to play against Fasil City hoping to extend their unbeaten run.

In their last match, 10-men Saint George overcame old foes Defense 3-0 at the Addis Ababa Stadium. The Horsemen were reduced to 10 men in the first interval after Mehari Mena was shown a straight red card for blatantly hitting Minyelu Wendimu. Defense could not build on their numerical advantage as the record Ethiopian champions put past three goals in the second half.

Burkinabe Abdulkerim Nikima put Saint George ahead in the 56th minute before veteran striker Adane Girma headed home to double the lead three minutes later. Second half substitute Salahdin Said sealed the win from a spot kick 10 minutes before time. Center back Salahdin Bargicho came on in the second half after virtually out for a year due to a knee injury. Salahdin got injured during national team duty when Ethiopia lost 1-0 to Rwanda in the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.

Newly promoted side Jimma Aba Bunna registered their historic first victory of the season overcoming the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia 2-0. Dawit Tefera gave the Jimma outfit the lead five minutes after recess. Ame Mohammed put the final nail in the coffin on the 80th minute. Midfielder Dawit became the first Jimma Aba Bunna player to score in the premier league.

In another match, Addis Ababa City came from behind to force a 1-1 draw against Electric. Electric’s winless run continued as the newly promoted Addis Ababa are unbeaten in their opening three fixtures. Dawit Estifanos’s wonderful curling effort put Electric ahead in the 21st minute. Addis Ababa City hit back through Fikadu Alemu in the 39th minute through a simple header from close range.

The Horsemen are placed on top of the table with nine points from three games. Wolaitta Dicha are second with six points from two games. Adama city are third with six points but inferior to Dicha on goal difference. The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Defense, Arba Minch City and Ethiopia Coffee are languishing on the bottom of the table.
