The best Ethiopian athletes from the Olympic and World Athletics Championships will compete in the Ethiopian Athletics Championships. Among the athletes taking part are Olympic gold medalist Solomo Barega, world champion gold medalist Letesenebet Gidey, and Lemicha Girma.
The Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF) announced that the 52nd Ethiopian Athletics Championship will be held from May 16 to 20, 2023, at the Ethiopian Sports Academy in Addis Ababa.
Athletes who have participated in continental, international, and Olympic competitions will compete in the championship. A variety of elite athletes from various regions, municipal governments, clubs, organizations, and sports academies are participating in the championships.
The EAF emphasized that the champions will be selected directly from the competition to represent Ethiopia at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, which will be held from August 19 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary. It is believed that providing athletes with an opportunity to self-evaluate and providing clubs with a competitive arena are also among the competition’s key purposes.
1270 athletes from 30 clubs and institutes, 11 districts, and municipal administrations will battle for the championship. Except for the first day of the six-day event, all programs will take place in the morning.
A total of 541,000 birr has been set aside as prize money for the winners of each event, as well as those who shatter records or win multiple medals.
Due to the inclusion of the women’s long jump in the Ethiopian championship, it was indicated that this year’s competition would differ from those of previous years. The amount of the prize money is also significantly higher.
There will be live broadcasts of the championship’s opening and closing ceremonies.
The national championship for the sport is an annual outdoor track and field competition that the EAF hosts. The first competition was held in 1971.
