Athletics officials have today ratified the world indoor 3000m record set earlier this month by Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma.
Lemecha clocked an astonishing time of 7:23.81 at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in France on February 15, smashing the previous record of 7:24.90 set by Kenya’s Daniel Komen back in 1998.
In a thrilling race, Spain’s Mohamed Katir also dipped below the old record, finishing second in 7:24.68 – a new European record.
The 22-year-old Lemecha, who has achieved major medal success on the track including Olympic and world championship medals, has now entered the record books with his historic run. He underlined his talent just days later by running a world-leading 7:52.11 in the 3000m steeplechase in Paris, demonstrating his versatility across distances.
The ratification of Lemecha’s world record time makes it official and places his name in the history books alongside the greatest indoor 3000m runners of all time.
