Ethiopian athletes shine at polish diamond league meet

Ethiopian athletes stole the show at the Poland Silesia Diamond League meet, delivering four top finishes in the women’s 1500 meters.

Hirut Meshasha raced to victory in the event, running a personal best time of 3 minutes, 54.87 seconds. Teammate Birke Ayelom finished just behind in 3:54.93 for second place. Fellow Ethiopian Derbe Wolteji, who cheered on Hirut and Birke, crossed the line third in a season’s best time, while Worknesh Melese completed the Ethiopian sweep taking fourth.

Meshasha’s triumphant return to form after injury was particularly inspiring, as the entire Ethiopian squad dropped seconds from their previous 1500-meter times.

The multi-city Diamond League circuit continues on July 21, 2023, in Monaco, where Ethiopian distance stars Berihu Aregawi, Samuel Tefera and Hagos Gebrehiwet will compete in the 5000 meters.

The annual Diamond League series features the world’s top athletes competing in 24 elite track and field events at 14 meets. World Athletics, formerly known as the IAAF, uses performances from the one-day competitions to compile the Diamond League standings.
