Ethiopian national team leader joins Ethiopian sports brand

WANAW, an Ethiopian sports equipment manufacturer, has named Ethiopian national team captain Shimeles Bekele as its brand ambassador. Shimeles, currently playing for ENPPI Football Club in Egypt, signed a three-year renewable contract with WANAW.

At a press conference on Tuesday, WANAW’s general manager Habteslase Geberkiristos said the partnership will support Shimeles’ football career going forward. Habteslase stated that the company aims to improve the quality, availability, cost and design of sportswear in Ethiopia.

Shimeles has had a fruitful football career, starting with Hawassa City B team and playing for St. George FC. After success in the Ethiopian Premier League, he played in Libya and Sudan before joining Egyptian clubs.

Shimeles has represented Ethiopia at the international level for many years. He was part of the team that qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations after a 31-year absence, and captained Ethiopia when they returned to the tournament after an 8-year gap.
