Ethiopian Airlines to resume flights to two cities in Amhara region

After briefly cancelling all flights to four cities in the conflict-ridden Amhara region for security reasons, Ethiopian Airlines is resuming services to two of the cities starting tomorrow, August 10, 2023.

The national carrier announced today that flights to Bahir Dar and Gondar will operate as scheduled starting Thursday. Ethiopian Airlines had cancelled flights to the Amhara cities – which also include Dessie and Lalibela – just the day before on August 8, due to the ongoing fighting in parts of the Amhara region under a state of emergency.

While Ethiopian Airlines did not provide further details on the reasons for the earlier cancellations and subsequent resumption of flights, the move comes as government forces battle Fano rebels in parts of Amhara. The region has been under a state of emergency since last week due to the escalating conflict.

The return of flights to Bahir Dar and Gondar will come as a relief to travelers and residents who rely on Ethiopian Airlines for transport. However, there was no update from the airline regarding flights to the other two cities, Dessie and Lalibela, indicating services remain cancelled for the time being.
