The parliament today approved declaring a state of emergency in the Amhara region with a majority vote, despite facing opposition by some MPs.
An emergency session had been called by the speaker for today to discuss and vote on the government’s proposal to impose the decree in the Amhara region.
Out of the 360 members present during the session, 332 voted in favor of the emergency declaration for the Amhara region while 16 members voted against it. In addition, 12 MPs decided to abstain from voting on the decree.
