AU chief calls for ceasefire and dialogue in Amhara region

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has expressed “grave concern” over the continued military confrontations taking place in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. He has called for an “immediate ceasefire.”

In a statement issued today from Addis Ababa, Mahamat said he is closely following the situation. He reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to upholding Ethiopia’s “constitutional order, territorial integrity, unity and national sovereignty.”

The AU chief strongly urged all parties to “cease fighting immediately and ensure civilian protection.” He further called on them to “engage in dialogue to reach a peaceful solution.”

Mahamat said stability is needed in Ethiopia and the wider region. He reiterated the AU’s readiness to “support an inter-Ethiopian initiative aimed at establishing peace and stability.”

The statement comes amid clashes between government forces and rebel groups in Amhara region, where a state of emergency has been in effect for the past two weeks.
