Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway successfully defended his 5000m world title with a commanding performance at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The 22-year-old Ingebrigtsen crossed the line in a time of 13:11:30 to retain the gold medal he won last year in Eugene.

Chasing Ingebrigtsen hard over the last lap were Spaniard Mohamed Katir and Kenyan Jacob Krop. Katir produced a late surge but had to settle for silver in 13:11:44, while Krop held on for bronze in 13:12:26.

Hagos Gebrehiwot and Berihu Aregawi were leading the field before the bell, while Yomif Kejelcha tried to speed up from further back to follow them, but he was unable to keep up with Ingebrigtsen’s pace on the final circuit.

Yomif finished fifth in 13:12:51, while Hagos and Berihu took sixth and eighth respectively in times of 13:12:65 and 13:12:99
