“The Ministerial meeting will build on the discussions of the previous sessions…and continue efforts to achieve convergence,” reads a social media post from Ambassador Sileshi Bekele, who leads the Ethiopian delegation.
A mutual agreement on the dam has been elusive since negotiations began nearly a decade ago, and despite the Declaration of Principles signed by all three countries in 2015.
Negotiations were suspended in 2021 following the start of the dam’s filling.
In July 2023, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Egyptian President Al-Sisi agreed to return to the negotiation table.
Talks resumed the following month but three successive summits held in Cairo and Addis Ababa did not bear a final agreement.
