PM Abiy Ahmed bids farewell to retiring deputy

Demeke Mekonen, deputy prime minister and foreign minister, has stepped down from his senior posts in the administration, reportedly as part of the ruling Prosperity Party’s succession policy.

Formerly a member of the ANDM political party, Demeke has served as Deputy Prime Minister since 2012, under three successive heads of government. He took on the Foreign Minister post in 2020.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) bid Demeke farewell during a Prosperity Party central committee meeting today, January 26, 2024. Both posts remain vacant but it is expected that the party meeting will culminate in a reshuffle that will also fill Demeke’s former positions.
