    Jimma, St. George, Mekele continue title fight


    The Ethiopian Premier League (EPL) closing weeks come nearer and nearer with week 23 coming to an end. Newcomers Jimma Aba Jiffar and Mekele City and defending champions St. George are within a single point difference from one other and are nearing the finish line to the 2017/18 season.

    After the suspension of matches for two weeks as a result of misdemeanor by both players and footballing fans, on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, league leaders Jimma, in their quest to the title, drew their match against relegation threatened Arba Minch while St. George and Mekele City secured vital three points.

    Jimma Aba Jiffar are unbeaten in their last six fixtures but consecutive draws have put pressure on the leaders after their counterparts won their respective matches. The 14-times title winner and defending champions, the Horsemen, beat Welwallo Adigrat University 1-0, with the lone goal coming from Ame Mohammed’s 21-minute strike. With this crucial win the horsemen are placed second on the league table with 40 points sharing the same point tally with first placed Jimma.

    Similarly, another contender for first place — Mekele City won 2-0 against Adama City with Yared Kebede opening the score sheet on the 25th minute. Amanuel Gebremichael secured the match on the 84th minute moving them to third with 39 points and a game in hand which could see them leap-frog to first place.

    Elsewhere, in another round of week 23 matches held – Dedebit a.k.a. the Blues were defeated 4-3 by relegation fighter Electric. Meanwhile, Ethiopia Coffee faced Woldia City and won the game 3-0. Hawassa City secured the three points with a 2-0 win over Fasil City.

    Hawassa are placed seventh with 33 points and Fasil sits eighth on goal difference. Ethiopia Coffee follows the pack with 36 points seated fourth.

    Electric, Welwalo Adigrat and Woldia City are fighting to stay in the league.
