Takele appointed as de facto mayor of Addis Ababa

Pursuant to the recently amended the Addis Ababa City Charter, outgoing Mayor of the City, Diriba Kuma, has passed on the reins to Takele Umma (Eng.), who is not a member of the City Council and was appointed as Deputy Mayor of city, this afternoon, The Reporter has learnt.

The recent amendment provided for the Deputy Mayorship to be occupied by candidates who are not members of the City Council. Takele is expected to lead the city with a Deputy Mayor portfolio starting this week perhaps for the first in the capital’s history.

Prior to his appointment, Takele was a senior member of the Oromia Regional State Cabinet with a portfolio of head of the Transport Bureau of regional administration. Takele also has some municipality experience mainly serving as head of the Regional Land Development and Administration Office, as General Manager of the Sululta Town, in Special Zone of the Oromia Regional State, and heading transport and industry offices in another Oromia town: Sebeta.

Furthermore, Dagmawit Moges, currently Head of the City’s Communications Office, and Solomon Kidane (PhD), Head of Roads and Transport Office, were both appointed to lead various departments in city administration with deputy mayor portfolio.
