Suleiman Ahmed, the driver in the team of journalists from Dire Dawa City Mass Media Agency, who were attacked by a group of youth in Meisso on Friday, has passed away today in a hospital in Dire Dawa, The Reporter learnt.
It was on Friday July 13, 2018 that a mob attacked a group of journalists who were traveling to Addis Ababa for coverage of President Isaias Afewerki’s visit to Addis Ababa, which was scheduled for the following day.
According to reports, the attackers accused the journalists of spying and attacked them before they handed them over to the police.
Although Suleiman has been under medical care both at Dil Chora Hospital in Dire Dawa and Hiywot Fana Hospital in Harar, the injury he sustained on his head and ribs made it difficult to save his life, sources told The Reporter.
Even though there was a plan to refer him to Addis Ababa’s Black Lion Specialized Hospital, Suleiman’s families requested his transfer to a Hospital in Harar. He died at eleven in the morning of Thursday July 19, 2018.
The police are yet to start investigation into the attack, sources added.
Suleiman, 37, is a father of three and was expecting his fourth child. He has been serving in the Agency for more than five years.
