Former telecom CEO to lead education quality agency

Andualem Admassie (PhD), the erstwhile CEO of Ethio Telecom has been replaced by the former deputy CEO of the defunct Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) Frehiwot Tamiru.

Andualem, who has been working for the telecom monopoly for the past eight years where he was Chief Internal Audit Officer from 2010 to 2012, Chief Human Resource Officer from 2012 to 2013 and as Chief Executive Officer from 2013 to 2018 has now been appointed as Director for the Higher Education Relevance and Quality Agency (HERQA).

Frehiwot will begin her role as CEO of Ethio Telecom on Monday July 23, 2018, according to a presser the communications department of Ethio Telecom sent to The Reporter.

Frehiwot has a Master’s in Business Administration from Open University, UK while she received her first degree was from Addis Ababa University in Information Systems. She has eight years’ experience in the field of telecommunications where she climbed up the ladder to be the deputy CEO of the erstwhile Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation.

Still serving in Ethio Telecom’s board of management, she is also the founder and managing director of Doksa IT Technology. She also established and implemented different startups which are still in service.

The new position Andualem assumed requires close engagement with higher educational institutions in the country. HERQA is “responsible for guiding and regulating the sector along with the Higher Education Strategy Center (HESC) and the National Pedagogic Resource Center (NPRC),” according to the Agency’s website.

The Higher Education Proclamation, which was approved in 2013, provides that the powers and duties of the Agency’s director include to direct and administer the Agency a Chief Executive, and he shall execute powers and duties of the Agency, employ and administer personnel necessary for the activities of the Agency, represent the Agency in all its dealings with third parties, delegate his powers and duties to the employees of the Agency if necessary, prepare and submit to the board the annual plan and budget of the Agency and implement it on approval, submit report to the board, establish relationship with foreign higher education institutions in cooperation with the appropriate organs, keep the books of accounts of the Agency and discharge such duties necessary for the implementation of the objectives of the Agency as may be entrusted to him by the Ministry of Education of Board of the Agency.

Andualem has a PhD in Business Administration from Bulacan State University, the Philippines. He is also a graduate of MA in Educational Leadership and Management (EDPM) from Addis Ababa University while receiving his BSc from the same university in Business Education. He also has a diploma in Project Management.
