The Ethiopian youth team has been taking part in the third African youth games which took place in Algeria, Algiers from July 18 – 28, 2018. Ethiopia finished seventh on the medal leader board with 25 medals collecting eleven gold, eight silver medals and six bronze medals.

30  types of sports were contested in the third edition of the African Youth games. However, the Ethiopian youth team participated only in four types of events which were athletics, Bicycle, Box and Taekwondo.

Comparing to the previous results, Ethiopia bagged less medals than previous.  The team was received warmly by the Ethiopian Olympic committee (EOC) on August 1, 2018.

Concerning participations, the EOC president, Ashebir Woldegiorgis(MD) stated that the competition helped young talents share experiences.

Ethiopia registered gold in taekwondo competition which made the contestant advance automatically to the next Olympic competitions whereas the silver and bronze medalist will await the decision of the International Olympic Committee. Ethiopia will attend the upcoming 2018 summer youth Olympics which will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

According to the EOC president, the team should focus on the next competition and be ready. The third African youth games feature approximately 3,300 athletes from 54 African countries who compete in 30 sports. Algiers was awarded the games by the Association of national committees of Africa in 2014.
