The zonal administration council of the Kaffa Zone has unanimously passed a resolution supporting the statehood of Kaffa zone on its meeting held today in the zonal capital Bonga.
Bonga and the surrounding districts in the zone have been rocked with widespread protests following a controversy regarding the birthplace of coffee. Although the protests targeted the messages from Ethiopian Airlines and the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, which acknowledged Kaffa at one time and Jimma the other time as birthplaces of Coffee, it continued for five consecutive days and raised other issues.
One of the issues raised during the protest was the question of statehood which forced the zonal council to vote on the motion at its ordinary session today.
Following the acceptance of Sidama’s quest for statehood by the regional council of the Southern Region, most zonal administrations in the region have been raising the same demands and some have discussed it at the zonal council level.
