The 16th edition of the annual Women First 5km women-only race is set to take place in AddisAbaba, this Sunday, March 10, 2019. A total of 13 thousand women are expected to participatein the race.
As one of the annually scheduled Great Ethiopian Run (GER) events, the Women-First run has grown to be the biggest women-only run in Ethiopia and is one of the biggest races conducted in Africa. The race will mark the international women’s day (March 8) becoming a celebration of the overall contribution of women in our country’s development.
On Thursday,March 7, 2019 the GER stated that over 200 elite and 30 new athletes will participate in the races. Started in 2004, in the same year as the Athens Olympics, the race recognizes the achievements of Ethiopia’s great female athletes. It also aims to support the broader challenge regarding the role of women in Ethiopia’s economic and social life.
An Olympic gold medalist and the winner of the London Olympics 5000m race, MeseretDefar, is the ambassador of this event. More than 100,000 girls and women aged 5 to75 have taken part in the last 15 editions since the race came into existence.
Ethiopia to host African zonal kickboxing tournament
Ethiopian kickboxing federation is set to host African zonal competitions on March 30, 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan will participate in the tournament.
Historically developed from Karate,Kickboxing is a type of sports which mainly focuseson mixing martial arts with boxing. Nowadays, it is becoming one of the favorite sports practiced in the gym by many sport enthusiasts’.
Kickboxing is practiced for self -defense, general fitness, or as contact sport. Basically, it originated in the late 1950s with competitions held since then. It was years ago kickboxing begun in Ethiopia by an Ethio-Canadian. There were several clubs which are based in Addis Ababa and practice in different gymnasiums.
A month ago,the Ethiopian kickboxing federation was opened in Addis Ababa.
