Telecom operators invited to express interests in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Telecommunications Authority (ECA) has started accepting proposals and expressions of interest from telecom operators around the world in anticipation of the opening up of the Ethiopian Telecom sector, which is expected to introduce two more new independent operators in addition to the state-owned monopoly— Ethio Telecom.

In a press release the Authority sent out to The Reporter, operators wanting to enter the Ethiopian telecom market can submit their expression of interest until June 22, 2020. From then, two potential operators will be chosen to acquire licenses that would allow them to operate in the local market on the side of the giant Ethio Telecom. Currently, Ethio Telecom holds an exclusive monopoly over the telecom services in Ethiopia and the new entrants would be the first of their kind to operate in the local market.
