Awaiting patiently investigation report on crashed plane

First we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the passengers and crew of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302who perished in a tragic accident on March 10 after the Boeing 737 Max8 they were on board crashed shortly after take-off. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. We hope they find the strength to overcome their loss. News of the crash has shocked and traumatized not only Ethiopia and the 35 nations whose citizens died in the crash, but the whole world too. Leaders of nations and international organizations, diplomats, the CEOs of major multinational companies and ordinary citizens have all expressed their deepest sympathies. At this time of profound grief Ethiopians must patiently await the outcome of the investigation report on the accident. Until such time that the report is officially published we need to refrain from any and all counterproductive act. While it’s incumbent on us to console the families and friends of the victims with empathy so that they may find closure,we have to be cognizant of and adhere to the rules of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) relating to aircraft accident.

According to the provisions laid down in ICAO Annex 13 to the International Civil Aviation Convention - Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation, no definitive explanation regarding the cause of the accident may be proffered until such time the final results of the investigation, carried out by the stakeholders as defined by the protocol, are officially announced no one may hazard an opinion on the cause. This is an internationally settled practice. Surmising about the cause before the investigation is complete would be nothing more than an unfounded speculation. Therefore, it’s of the essence that everyone demonstrates patience until the investigation team comprised of the Ethiopian Ministry of Transportation, the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority as well as overseas entities including Boeing, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) collect the necessary evidence, interpret the data collected and make a final determinationas to the reason why ET Flight 302 went down.

ICAO’s protocol on aircraft accident investigation also stipulates that that the sole objective of the investigation of an accident or incident is to ascertain the cause thereof and prevent similar accidents and incidents. It further provides that pointing fingers before the investigation is over in no way helps the investigation process as it is not within the purview of the investigation to apportion blame or liability.Accordingly, it emphatically underscores that neither the manufacturer nor the operator of the aircraft involved can be found culpable prior to the official disclosure of the findings of the investigation. The protocol emphasizes that the establishment of the occurrence of a fault that precipitated the accident should be used to draw lessons, not hurl accusations at one another. Therefore, it’s of the essence to desist from any and all acts which undermine the credibility of the investigation process and its conclusions.

At this time of mourning utmost priority needs to be given to empathizing with the families and loved ones of the victims of the crash. It’s lunacy to be insensitive to the pain they are going through.Extra caution must be displayed to ensure that the information disseminated both on mainstream and social media does not subject them to more anguish. Let’s not confuse them with false or unsubstantiated information. Let’s see to it that the opinions expressed on the accident are grounded in knowledge. And let’s not post or show disturbing pictures and video foot ages. Nothing justifies acts that flout common decency.

As a national treasure which abides by the rules of ICAO and has a stellar safety record Ethiopians are duty-bound to stand with and cherish Ethiopian Airlines during this difficult period. Many aviation experts and flyers have been paying testimony to the national carrier’s greatness and achievement since the unfortunate tragedy. An operator that has emerged competitive on the global stage with major players and is going on from success to success it is the pride of Africa. Ethiopian Airlines is a living proof that any organization can climb to the pinnacle of success by running an operation that is aboveboard. It should be supported unreservedly free of any political partisanship as it endeavors to navigate this trying time. All in all Ethiopians owe the victims ET Flight 302 the responsibility of patiently awaiting the outcome of the investigation into the crash.
