Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), on Thursday, inaugurated Sheger Bread Factory, which was constructed by MIDROC outlaying 900 million birr. The Factory has the capacity to produce 1.5 million loaves of bread a day and 80,000 an hour. Prime Minister Abiy said at the inaugural ceremony that the construction of the Factory is an excellent indication of the efforts that the country has been making to ensure food security and eradicate poverty. Built in the Akaki Kaliti Sub City in Addis Ababa on a 41,000 square meters plot, the Factory will be able to reduce the current cost of a 100 grams bread to 1.20 birr from three birr. “The Sheger Bread Factory we inaugurated today and which took 10 months from conception to finalization is symbolic of our path to prosperity,” Abiy said. Pointing out that the nation has been importing food items from abroad with hard currency, he stated that the construction of such food industries has a great deal of contribution to address such challenges.
