China outlays 250 mln birr to fund scholarships

The Chinese government has pledged to outlay 250 million birr to fund a scholarship program for 228 Ethiopian students. The scholarship was provided for Masters and Doctoral students The Reporter has learnt.

Out of the 228 students, 66 students will be attending doctorate programs and the rest, will attend the master’s programs.

The farewell ceremony was held in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and invited guests, on September 5, 2019 at the National Palace.

The Prime Minister, addressing the gathering, said that the students should be a bridge between the people of the two countries to strengthen the existing ties.

“Ethiopia is now in darkness. But to get out of this darkness, the one and only solution is knowledge,” Abiy stressed.

Wishing them a fruitful time in China, Abiy encouraged the students to pay attention to the ways in which knowledge is at the root of alleviating Ethiopia’s challenges and pointed out that Ethiopia expects more upon their return.

The scholarship program was provided for Federal Ministries and regional governments. Furthermore, apart from the scholarship, short-term trainings are set for 800 Ethiopians.

Liu Yu, Economic and Commercial counselor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Ethiopia told The Reporter that these students will be going to different provinces in China.

According to her, the scholarship is part of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (MOFCOM) scholarship program.

Chinese ambassador to Ethiopia, Tan Jian, on his behalf said that China’s support in the Human Development sector mainly aims to improve management skills and practical techniques for government officials, academic experts and specialized technicians.

It can be recalled that back in 2018, more than 7000 Ethiopians went to China for short-term trainings, and 300 students for Masters and Doctorate programs were sent.
