Death toll rises to seven in Woldia’s Epiphany clash

The number of deceased in yesterday's clash in Woldia Town at the Kana Zegelila celebration in connection to the Epiphany Festival reached seven, the Northern Wolo Zone Police Department Head, Commander Amare Goshu, told the regional broadcaster Amhara TV, this evening. Kana Zegelila is the second day of the Epiphany Festival.

One member of the security force and other six civilians were reported dead, according to the head; while two other security personnel have sustained severe injuries.

The total number of the people who have sustained injures has also gone up to 15, according to the police head. The commander also confirmed that the clashes have continued through today and saw cars, houses and hotels burned down.

Although the security forces were trying to avoid the clash, according to the commander, most of the conflict was provoked by civilian who went to the extent of attacking a policeman.
