EAF unveils athletes for IAAF, African games

The Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF) has announced the name of athletes taking part in international competitions across the world and the All-Africa Games scheduled to be hosted in Rabat, Morocco.

The 2019 IAAF World Athletics championship will take place from September 27 to October 6, 2019 in Qatar, Doha. Meanwhile, the 12th edition of the All-Africa Games will take place from August 19-31, 2019 in Rabat, Morocco.

The EAF, based on the recent improved standards set for selecting athletes, has picked athletes who have registered high minima. Following the requirements, athletes that have participated in the 48th edition of the Ethiopian championships, international competitions, and the Diamond League, since the start of the 2019 calendar year, will be the first choices to represent the country for the coming All-Africa Games. The requirement includes the results of the Hengelo trial competitions and African athletics championships.

The Ethiopian athletics governing body has also revealed the athletes taking part in the 17th edition of the IAAF World Championships. In this regard, those who have competed in the 2017 IAAF World Championships, record holders in the 2019 Diamond League and 10k winner in the Hengelo meeting will be directly selected to take part.

In respect to the distances run, and the results achieved, the EAF has shortlisted the name of athletes for the 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m, 5000m, 10,000m and racewalking disciplines. For the men, notably, Solomon Barega, Hagos Gebrehiwot, Yomif Kejelicha have been chosen. For the women’s races, Genzebe Dibaba, Litesenbet Giday, Almaz Ayana, Senbere Tefere and other athletes have been shortlisted to be part of the Ethiopian team.

The 2016 Rio Olympics 10k world record holder, Almaz Ayana and Solomon Barega, among others, are highly expected to perform well in the 2019 IAAF athletics Championships. Gudaf Tsegaye and Axumait Ambay are also listed in the Ethiopian national team.

The EAF, has however, noted that it is possible for athletes to report if there are any complaints over the selection process. The athletes have commenced their preparations weeks ago in Addis Ababa stadium.
