Editors form association

Editor’s working in different mainstream media organizations, have officially formed their own association on Monday, August 19, 2019. The meeting, which was held at Golden Royal Hotel, included Editors working on print, broadcast and online media that came together to form the Editors Guild of Ethiopia.

Bruh Yihunbelay, Managing Editor of the weekly English newspaper, The Reporter, who was also the member of the ad hoc committee, said that the association is established to protect members and journalists while they are practicing their profession. He said that Editor’s currently face different pressures from politicians, businesses and their employees.

“It is the right time for Editors to form their independent associations to practice their profession without the interference and pressure of external bodies.”

Getachew Dinku (PhD), Director General of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority, in his keynote address expressed his enthusiasm on the formation of the association, adding that his office would provide full support. “I am personally happy to see the formation of your association. The government is ready and willing to support such efforts,” he said.

Founding members attending the meeting held discussions on the Articles of Association (AoA) document presented by the committee and agreed to include the comments raised during the discussions.  

Close to 40 professionals from 20 media organizations were in attendance at the formation meeting, electing seven executive committee members of the Editors Guild of Ethiopia. It was learnt that the executive committee members include Fitihawok Yewondwossen, Editor in Chief of Ahadu Television, elected as its Chairperson, Bruh Yihunbelay, Managing Editor of The Reporter Newspaper, Deputy Chairperson and Fasika Tadesse, Editor-in-Chief of Fortune newspaper as secretary of the association.

Invited and willing media professionals from private, government and regional media organizations were also in attendance during the formation meeting.

According to the memorandum of association, Editors of all levels working in a locally registered media organization can be a member of the association.

The association aims to focus on boosting its members’ professional excellence by facilitating and conducting professional trainings. In addition to that, the association will work closely with similar local, regional, and international institutions to enhance its members’ capacity.
