Hawassa Half Marathon is staged annually in the beautiful city of Hawassa. The city with low altitude and a flat surface has made Hawassa an ideal place for long distance running. The event was started in 2010 and took place for a consecutive 5 year period before it was interrupted for two years in 2015 and 2016.

It resumed in 2017 after the GER signed a three year Memorandum of Understanding with Hawassa municipality to stage the event annually from 2017 onwards. Hawassa, 275 km south of the capital city Addis Ababa is located at an altitude of 1700m/5577 ft/ above sea level. This gives an opportunity for runners to test their actual performances to be fit for the international races across the world.
