Ethiopia to host International Conference on Sustainable Industrial Areas
Ethiopia is set to host the eighth edition of the International Conference on Sustainable Industrial Areas in the capital starting on April 8th. To be held at Intercontinental Addis, this is the first time it has been brought to the country, after being held in countries such as India, China, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, Morocco and Egypt, previously.
“It is in the interest of the Government of Ethiopia to have industries that are environmentally sustainable,” said TemesgenTilahun, the Deputy Investment Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission. “Building a sustainable industry increases our competitiveness in the international arena and brings in more international buyers. The Sustainable Industrial Conference is an important opportunity for Ethiopia to learn from experiences, revise our policies and implement effective and sustainable strategies, added Temesgen.”
Organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the gathering is expected to attract more than 300 international delegates from around the world, as interests in sustainable industrialization continues to be the preferred choice for Ethiopia’s development.
In addition, the Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation, the Ethiopian Investment Commission, the United Kingdom Department of International Development and the International Finance Cooperation–are set to be involved as a marketing strategy to make Ethiopia fulfill its industrialization goals.
The gathering will be used to attract foreign investment as a strategy to boost the much needed local employment and promote sustainable industrialization in the country.
GIZ is known for its work within Ethiopia, expanding the capacities of Ethiopian businesses, job creation and making the nation a preferred society for investment.
“Special Economic Zones, or in Ethiopia, the newly established industrial parks, offer a high potential for new decent jobs. The conference shall serve as a platform to exchange international experiences on job creation and sustainable economic development,” said Ulrich Plein, Manager of GIZ supported Special Initiative Training and Job Creation Project.
In addition, as a side event, there will be a trade fair for environmental technologies, a fashion show, and training opportunities and site visits to Ethiopia’s growing industrial parks.
