Feasibility study to commence for 150MW power project
State owned consulting firm stretches to Tanzania, Nigeria
The Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity (MoWIE) has inked an agreement with the Ethiopian Construction Design & Supervision Works Corporation to conduct a pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for the construction of a 150 Megawatt (MW) Wabi Hydroelectric power project in the Southern Regional State.
The contract agreement, which was signed on Thursday, has commissioned the Corporation to conduct a study to establish the feasibility of a new power project designed to have 150MW hydropower in the Gurage Zone of the Southern Region.
Abiy Tsegaye, head of planning, programing and project administration office with the Corporation, told The Reporter that the study is due to be completed in 14 months and the ministry has agreed to pay 22.3 million birr for the service.
In addition to the hydropower project, the state owned consulting and designing firm has been involved in the feasibility studies and supervision works of projects such as roads, potable water and irrigation projects in Ethiopia. Its name has been attached with hydropower and irrigation projects such as Megech, Rib, Gidabo and the likes. Abiy says the Corporation’s track record includes Addis Ababa City Administration’s Akaki Ground Potable Water Project where the Corporation has been involved in from the very inception.
Currently, the Corporation is undertaking the feasibility study for a 2,100MW hydroelectric power project in Tanzania at cost of USD 1.2 million. Back in December, 2017, the Tanzanian government has announced the commencement of a 2,100MW Rufiji Hydropower Project which is also destined for export to the rest of East African countries.
The Corporation also acquired additional projects in Nigeria, Kaduna region, where a total of 37,000 hectare irrigation schemes is being developed. The Nigerian government is expected to pay more than USD 567,000 for the five design and feasibility experts involved in the Kaduna project.
According to Abiy, the total cost of the Wabi Hydropower project will be determined by the pre-feasibility and feasibility studies of the project. Along with the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which will be generating 6000MW, solar, wind and geothermal projects are considered to feed the Ethiopian energy pool in the coming years. A
