FIFA congress postponed due to COVID-19
The 70th edition of FIFA congress, scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa, has been rescheduled due to coronavirus (COVID-19) fears. FIFA stated that, on account of the spread of COVID-19, numerous international bodies and public bodies have advised against the organization of international events.
According to FIFA’s statements, the concerns over the health and well-being of participants, as well as travel restrictions in many countries, have resulted in the cancellation or postponement of such events in various part of the world. Due to this reason, the council has decided to reschedule the 70th FIFA congress from June 5, 2020 to September 2020, in Addis Ababa.
In addition, the world football governing body has also pointed out that the FIFA council meeting, which was scheduled to take place on March 20, has also been rescheduled to a later date yet to be confirmed, in June-July 2020, in Zurich or to be held via video conference.
It is to be recalled, the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) and Sport Commission have established a new committee to commence preparations, for the congress earlier, with over 3000 guests were expected to participate.
In related news, following the announcement made by the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring the virus a pandemic; many football leagues have either suspended or have played behind closed stadiums. In addition to Seri A, La Liga and International matches being suspended, the remaining Champions League and Europa League last-16 ties have also been suspended.
