Iceaddis, Giz and government honor eight businesses

GIZ, the Ministry of Agriculture of Ethiopia and Iceaddis, an innovation hub and a startup incubator,have teamed up to honor eight businesses who have provided innovative solutions to the agriculture challenges of the nation.

Titled – the Green Innovation Slam as part of the program of Germany’s Green Innovation Center Program – the initiative is to be an incentive to add to the production capacity of the local agricultural sector. 

“The green innovation center is working on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture of Ethiopia and the German government on the value chain of wheat and faba bean products,” said Magnus Schmid, Program Manager of the Green Innovation Center. “We are trying to support 300,000 small farmers with innovations. About 1 million tons of wheat is imported to Ethiopia from abroad and it’s important we fill the gap locally.”

Among the shortlisted candidates – withthe winner set to be invited to travel to Germany and visit relevant industries, andbe provided short-term trainings and mentorship–are founders of an e-commerce platform on specialized agricultural products, a manufacture of pesticides products, a food producer, an agro-processing company, a call center operator providing hotline for service providers, a website operator on vital agricultural information, an oxen-drawn seeder and a machine designer that provides environmental friendly agricultural machineries.

“Agriculture continues to play a key role in Ethiopia’s economy and society,” said State Minister of Agriculture,EyasuAbraha (PhD). “Primary agriculture production provides the livelihood basis of 80 percent of the population and accounts for 40 percent of the country’s GDP.”

“Competitions like this help encouragebusinesses to come up with innovative solutions to the challenges in the agricultural sector and contribute to the government’s plan of increasing productivity and income of small holder farmers and entrepreneurs,” he added.

The award ceremony took placelast night as Sapphire Addis Hotel and as of press time, the victor was not announced.
