Jimma, Defense to play continental match in Addis
The 2017/18 Ethiopian Premier League (EPL) champion Jimma Aba Jiffar is set to host ASAS Djibouti Telecom in the African champion’s league preliminary round leg two matches on Tuesday in Addis Ababa stadium while Defense will face Nigerian outfit Enugu Rangers in CAF Confederation preliminary round on Wednesday on home soil.
Jimma won 3-1 in the first round against ASAS Djibouti last week. In a bid to secure its continental participation, Jimma has been preparing months ahead of the competition. A club debutant for the African champions league competition, Jimma has won its first ever EPL title in its history.
Since winning the title, the champions were busy in forming a formidable squad by signing expensive experienced players from various clubs. Tuesday’s return match is vital for Jimma to see-out the fixture and ensure their continental participation.
Earlier, the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has confirmed Jimma will play its home game at Addis Ababa stadium following the request from the club. Meanwhile, their opponents ASAS, is a Djiboutian football club based south of the city. Djibouti Telecom is the 2017/18 champions of the Djibouti Premier League.
It is to be recalled that only St. George had succeeded to progress to the group stages during the 2016/17 African Champions League for the first time in Ethiopian football history; many clubs failing to go through to the group stage in the African champion’s league so far.
Elsewhere, Ethiopian cup winner Defense is set to face the Nigerian side Enugu Rangers in the preliminary return leg fixture on Wednesday in Addis Ababa stadium. After the appointment of a new coach, Seyoum Kebede, the army side seems to be in a good run of form. Defense has won its ninth cup in the Ethiopian cup competition. However, the army side were beaten 2-0 in first round via two penalty goals.
In the second round CAF confederation cup, Defense force is anticipated to take the home advantage to turn the result around.
Winners on aggregate will face either Morocco’s Hassania Agadir or Niger’s Republics AS GNN in the first round.
