Journalist Getachew Tedla Hailegiorgis (1947 - 2020)
Veteran journalist Getachew Tedla Hailegiorgis had been laid to rest at the Holly Trinity Cathedral Church in Addis Ababa, this week. Getachew died at the Black Lion Hospital while getting medical care for a sustained health issue.
Born in Addis Ababa in a family of 11 children form his father Tedla Hailegiorgis Woldemichael (Grazmach) and mother Aklile Neged, Getachew is the fifth child in the family.
He pursued his primary and secondary education at education at Lycée franco-éthiopien Guébré-Mariam School and went to France for higher education.
Getachew learned driving and shooting guns at age 12 and he was also part of the Congo Peace Keeping Corps as a translator. He was given the rank of a Major in the army.
Starting his journalism career at Bisrate Wongel Radio, later Radio Ethiopia International Radio French Language Desk where he shouldered the tasks of leading the desk, preparing programs and hosting them. According to his biography, he also played significant role in organizing the EU secretariat news department. His work as a journalist culminated at Deutsche Welle (DW) Radio where he worked for 28 years.
Getachew’s colleagues remember seeing him in action two weeks before the news of his death. His dedication amazes journalists and newsmakers alike – a never tiring and relentless man of professional integrity.
DW’s director Peter Limbourg in his condolence message said that, “Getachew regarded his reporting to DW International as a means to quench his thirst for democracy and freedom of expression.”
During his spare time, Getachew taught French at Alliance Ethio Francis and administered competency test.
Getachew was married to Mulushewa Bere and is survived by his single daughter Leyu Getachew.
