Keira Ibrahim replaces Yalew Abate as HoF Speaker
Joint session approves proposal to postpone 4th census
Following the appointment of Muferiat Kemal as Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR), the House of Federation (HoF) on Monday, April 30, 2018 unanimously approved the election of Keira Ibrahim as its Speaker to become the second woman to clinch top leadership in government.
Keira’s election comes after the resignation of the former speaker Yalew Abate. He has served as speaker of the House for three years.
Keira has served as the Head of Public Service office of Tigray Regional State before her election as speaker.
It is to be recalled that Muferiat Kemal was elected to head the lower house, replacing veteran politician Abadulla Gemeda.
In a related news, a joint session held between the two Houses – the House of Peoples’ Representatives and House of Federation – on the same date approved a proposal which postpones the 4th population and housing census.
The House approved the proposal with a majority vote after a thorough discussion. Ninety members voted in favor of the proposal, while 10 voted against and 3 abstained.
Inadequate preparation due to the unrest over the past few years is the reason that forced for the postponement of the census.
It is to be recalled that the third population and housing census which was scheduled for 2005 was similarly postponed to 2007.
