LONG LOST FRIENDS

It was in 1976 that Mengistu Hailemariam (Lt. Col.) became the first Ethiopian Head of State to have made a “secret” visit to Cuba to plead for assistance to combat Ethiopia’s growing insurgencies. Two years later, in April 1978 Mengistu returned to Cuba where he received Cuba’s highest honor, the Playa Giron – The Bay of Pigs Medal.  After almost forty years, an Ethiopian Head of State visited Cuba this week.  President Mulatu Teshome (PhD) traveled to Havana on Monday January 8 where he met with Cuban President Raul Castro and discussed bilateral relations and global issues. Although this is his first official visit to Cuba as President of Ethiopia, Mulatu traveled to the island in 2016 to attend the funeral ceremonies of Fidel Castro in eastern Santiago de Cuba province.
