Loza & co. win Malta women’s league

Loza Abera, the first Ethiopian women footballer to play in a foreign league, has won the BOV Women’s League, finishing as the top goal scorer in the Malta league, and was voted the best female player of the year. Loza had joined the Malta based Football Club, Birkirkara, on a one year contract a couple of months ago from Adama City.

According to reports from Goal, the development comes after the Malta Football Federation (MFF) decided to terminate the 2019-20 football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this regard, the MFF said the first placed teams at the time when the competition was suspended, and subsequently terminated, are declared winners of their respective leagues (2019/20). This applies to BOV Premier League, BOV first, second, and third divisions and BOV Women’s League.

“The Maltese teams who will be participating in the 2020-21 UEFA Club competitions are Floriana FC (UEFA Champions League), Valletta FC, Hibernians FC and Sirens FC (UEFA Europa League), Birkirkara FC (UEFA Women’s Champions League) and Luxol Futsal (UEFA Futsal Champions League).”

Loza won the Maltese Women’s Super-Cup in December and has added her second league title. Her first was the Swedish Elitettan crown of Kungsbacka DFF in 2018, scoring three goals in eight games. Besides being crowned the Malta top flight champion for a record ninth time, Birkirkara will represent the country in the UEFA Women’s Champions League next year.

“It is a great honor to be chosen as MFPAs Best Female Player of the year. I want to thank God for this moment. Hopefully I can keep playing at this level and win more trophies in the new season,” Loza said on her twitter account.
