Many dead in Woldia’s Epiphany Festival
A number of people have been reported dead in a clash between the security forces and the youth that swarmed the streets of Woldia, a town in the Amhara Regional State, for the celebration of Kana Zegelila, the second day of the Epiphany Festival, it was learnt.
On his official Facebook page, confirming the clashes, the head of the Amhara Region’s Communications Bureau, Negusu Tilahun, stated that the cause of the clash and the number of casualties is still being investigated.
But, The Reporter’s sources from the location indicated that groups of youth were heard singing and dancing with music that have politically charged messages. The members of the security force warned them to stop the provocation but they refused to stop resulting in the fatal clash between the two.
Although the clash began yesterday, sources from Woldia said that there is sound of gun fire being heard in the town as late as this morning. People on social media have been expressing their grief for the deceased and their relatives beginning yesterday.
