Mekele to host Ethiopia Coffee in round one final EPL fixture

Round one of the Ethiopian Premier League (EPL) is to end this weekend with matches set to take place across the country. The last fixtures of round one, in week 15, will be taking place mostly in regional stadiums. Newcomers Mekele City host Ethiopia Coffee, Adama City play Jimma Aba Jiffar while Dedebit face Defense in Addis Ababa Stadium.

Having a good run, Mekele City a.k.a. the Red Lions will host Coffee on Sunday in Mekele Stadium. In their previous match the Red Loins triumphed over Electric 2-1. The northern side took the lead with the help of their young talent Amanuel Gebremicheal, on the 31st minute via a penalty though six minutes later Teklu Tesfaye equalized for Electric. However, with an impressive counterattack Amanuel got his brace in the 85th minute and led the Red Lions to victory.

Mekele City, who currently second on the league table having collected 24 points, have one match in hand. Based solely on the current performance of Mekele, Coffee will be tested to their limits by the northern side. Though, after a lengthy spell of inconsistencies in the past, in last week’s fixture, Coffee displayed a better performance against Fasil City at Addis Ababa Stadium.

Coffee won against Fasil coming from behind to win 3-2.  The Emperors’ goal came on the third minute by Ermias Hailu but Nigerian striker Samuel Sanumi equalized for Coffee in the ninth minute. Full of dramatic moments, former Defense and Jimma Aba Bunna forward Mohammed Nasir’s second goal came in the 16th minute helping the Emperors regain their lead. However, Coffees midfielder Elias Mamo found the back of the net on the 31 minute and added the third goal on the 61st minute giving the home side a crucial win.

It will be a significant match for both sides, in Mekele.  Meanwhile, Sunday’s fixture will see Adama City take on Jimma Aba Jiffar at the Ababe Bikila Stadium in Adama. Both sides have the same point tally and  both teams’ week 14 matches were postponed.  In their last 13 EPL fixtures Adama has lost only 2 matches while Jimma lost four games due to their woeful start.

In another fixture, Fasil will take on the relegation threatened Arba Minch City and league leaders Dedebit face Defense on Monday in Addis Ababa.

Elsewhere, matches between Hawasa City and St. George, Woliata Dicha and Wolidia City were postponed due to CAF matches.

Dedebit still top the table with 25 points and a game in hand followed by Mekele City with 24 points and a game in hand. St. George sit third sharing the same points tally with Jimma, placed fourth on goal difference. Electric, Dire Dawa City and Woldia City are still struggling in the relegation zone.
