Mekele, Welwalo and Suhul Shire to take part in preseason in UAE

The Ethiopian Premier League (EPL) champions Mekele 70 Enderta, and two other teams, Welwalo Adigrat and Suhul Shirel, are set to travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to commence their pre-season preparations. Ethio-Al-Najashi, Tigray Football Federation and Welwalo Adigrat University gave a briefing about the pre-season preparation details on Monday, July 29, 2019.

During a press conference held on Monday in Mekele, the organizers stated that the three clubs will stay in the UAE from August 25th to September 4th, 2019. The clubs will have a chance to play a friendly match against various clubs to prepare for the coming season. According to the presser, fans will also be part of this package and will travel to the UAE.

Ethio-Al-Najashi representative, Yasin Rajuh, elaborated on the travel package which aims to primarily develop the tourism sector with football. “The pre-season travel program was scheduled before five months and when Mekele became champions, it was a good encouragement for Tigray football,” Yasin said.

Angesom Kahasay, head of the secretariat of the Tigray Football Federation indicated that the pre-season preparation is a great opportunity for the clubs to build their teams for the coming premier league competition.

Welwalo Adigrat University team manager, Ashenafi Amar, on his part said that his team is ready for pre-season travels.

Uncommon in Ethiopian football, these will open doors for clubs to share experiences with other clubs in the Middle East. However, their overall expense has not been disclosed.

It can be recalled that Mekele 70 Enderta, who has won the title, is set to play against Cano Sport Academy in the CAF Champions League. The pre-season preparation is going to be vital for debutants Mekele to build-up their squad for the continental tournament and defend their title for the upcoming EPL season.

It was rumored that Mekele will have a friendly match with one of Eritrea’s football clubs. Following the disclosed information via several sources, it was reported that Eritrea has rejected the offer. However, Tigray’s Football federation secretary general said that it was a false statement.

Nonetheless, the EPL runners up and Ethiopia Cup winners, Fasil City, are set to travel to Eritrea for a friendly match.
