Ones dubbed the one of the top jailers of journalists in Africa, after Eritrea; Ethiopia seems to have turned a new page in its chapter with the release of journalists from prison and ushering in political reforms. Speaking at this year’s World Press Freedom Day opening session, President of Ethiopia, Sahlework Zewde, said that Ethiopia will redouble its efforts in promoting press freedom and indicated that the reforms undertaken have brought freedom of expression. Moreover, the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize 2019 recognized Reuters’ reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo for reporting on alleged Human Rights abuse in Myanmar state of Rakhine receiving USD 25,000 prize money.
