St. George, Sebeta faceoff in City Cup final

The 14th edition of the Addis Ababa City Cup will conclude with the final match between St. George and Sebeta City on Sunday at in Addis Ababa Stadium.

The newly-promoted Sebeta City has managed to secure a finals berth against St. George, on the back off a 3-1 victory over Defense on Wednesday. The goals came from Tadele Mengisha, Bonu Deyawara and Dawit Estifanos.

The newcomers were grouped in group B alongside Ethiopia Coffee, Electric and Welwalo Adigrat University. However, the final match will be a test for Sebeta City, as they are facing the five time city cup winners, St. George.   

On the other side of the aisle, the horsemen’s last game was a 2-0 win against Ethiopia Coffee, in a highly anticipated Sheger derby on Thursday. A first half goal from Abel Yalew and a second goal from Yabsera Tisfaye in the 58 minute was enough to guarantee a spot in the finals.

Eight clubs have contested the 14th edition Addis Ababa City Cup competition since the turn of the month in Addis Ababa stadium. Four clubs based in Addis Ababa city and four regional clubs were grouped to face-off in the national stadium to claim the cup. The newly promoted clubs Wolkite City and Sebeta were also invited to the competition.

St. George has managed to win the tournament five times, while Ethiopia Coffee and Electric have won it three times each. Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has also won the title once.

Elsewhere, the 2019/20 Ethiopian Premier League season is scheduled to commence on December 1, 2019.
