On top of the House
After he was honorably retired from his party’s central and executive committee, the House of People’s Representatives on Thursday appointed Tagesse Chaffo as the new Speaker of the House (the Federal Parliament) - a position which was vacant for just two days.
Until his appointment, Tagesse was the Minister of Public Service and Human Development, which on the same date was downgraded to a commission status after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), reformed his cabinet.
He is one of the senior members of Southern Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Movement (SEPDM) – one of the parties that constitute the ruling coalition of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary democratic Front (EPRDF). He was also one of the 14 senior figures relieved from the central committee during the the recent Organizational Congress held in Hawassa.
Tagesse served in different capacities in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Regional state. He has served in policy studies and research institutes before his appointment as Minister for Public Service and Human Resource Development in April.
During its third regular session of the parliamentary term, the House unanimously elected SPEDM’s candidate for the position.
He replaces Muferiat Kamil (also from SPEDM), who was in the position for the past five or so months. The transition has already taken place.
Muferiat was appointed this week as Minister of Peace – a new ministry which is said to be the most powerful position next to the prime minister – overseeing security and law enforcement apparatuses in Ethiopia.
