U20 CECAFA Cup to take place in Uganda

The Council of Central and Eastern Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) will host the third U-20 tournament in Uganda. The tournament is scheduled to take place from January 14 - 27.

The CECAFA Cup was first held in Tanzania in 2006 followed by Eritrea hosting the tournament in 2010. Since then, the competition has been cancelled due to various reasons.

This year, the tournament, after eight years is back on track targeting to recruit potential future professional footballers in the region. Uganda, who has won the two CECAFA Cups, will be hosting this highly expected tournament.

The tournament will play host to 11 CECAFA countries namely Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Somalia.

However, “Zanzibar is not taking part this year since the football federation is currently going through structural changes,” CECAFA Secretary Nicholas Musonye stated.

This year’s tournament will convene in Gulu and Jinja cities in Uganda with the winner receiving USD 50,000.
