Walias get Group K for 2021 AFCON qualifiers
The Ethiopian national team a.k.a. Walias have been drawn into Group K for the 2021 Total African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. During the draw held in Cairo on Thursday evening, the Ethiopian national team will face Ivory Coast, Niger and Madagascar.
The 2021 AFCON is set to be held in Cameroon and five pots have been drawn for the group stage qualifier matches. The qualifiers will kick off later this year, seeing two teams qualify from each of the 12 groups. The qualification match will commence in October 2019.
After a disappointing result in the last AFCON qualifiers game, Walias have commenced their preparations for the CHAN tournament last week. Coach Abraham Mebrahatu has called up 25 players for the first qualifiers match against Djibouti.
Another matter concerning African football, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has been undertaking several reforms. Following FIFA’s takeover of the running of CAF for the coming nine months, the African football governing body has announced the dismissal of Nigerian Amaju Pinnick as CAF vice president.
Meanwhile, FIFA secretary general Fatuma Samoura will take the responsibility to lead CAF and CAF President Ahmad is to work jointly as vice president for the coming nine month.
Elsewhere, CAF also took two measures to increase the women’s team from 8 to 12 at the African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON).
