Walias to play World Cup qualifier match
FIFA has announced the 10 groups for the second round of the African qualifier round for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Ethiopian national team a.k.a. Walias are drawn with Ghana, Zimbabwe and South Africa in group G of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
The Africa section of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification acts as qualifiers for the 2020 FIFA World Cup, for the national teams which are members of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF). 5 slots are only available in the final tournament for CAF teams.
The draw for the second round was held on January 21, 2020 at the Ritz Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. The first match will be played on October 5, 2020. The third round will see the ten group winners from second round drawn into five home and away ties. The winner will advance to the 2022 World Cup.
The Ethiopian national team advanced to the second round qualifier after drawing 1-1 against Lesotho and went through to the next round by an away goal rule. The two teams played a scoreless match in the first leg hosted in Bahir Dar stadium.
It is to be recalled that the Walias had managed to qualify in the 2014 World Cup under Coach Sewent Bishaw.
